The Craigieburn Train Maintenance Facility was delivered as a major rail infrastructure project designed to support train servicing, maintenance, stabling and operational requirements for the growing rail network.
The completed facility includes a train maintenance workshop, train wash, overnight stabling roads, a jacking road, substations, staff amenities building, car parking, overhead wiring, rail track infrastructure, signalling and communications systems.
The maintenance building accommodates three dead-end service roads with fixed contact wire systems, monorail hoists, and capacity for two three-car train sets per road. Additional facilities include a lift road, tool stores, back shop, bogie storage areas, staff amenities, access platforms, and integrated lifting, cranage, and turntable systems.
Comprehensive building services were incorporated throughout the project, including mechanical, electrical, CCTV, hydraulic, fire, communications and access control systems, together with specialist facility plant equipment.
Ancillary works included the construction of a gatehouse, security fencing, roads, hardstand areas, car parking, pedestrian pathways, landscaping, acceleration and deceleration lanes along Sydney Road, and associated rail signalling and overhead electrification works. Sustainable infrastructure initiatives, including rainwater harvesting systems, were also integrated into the facility.
